Spotlight on DSTI

The Data Science, Technology and Innovation programme (DSTI) welcomed its first cohort of 8 students back in January 2016.  The DSTI programme is unique in that it incorporates courses from Schools across the University of Edinburgh allowing students a variety of choices from the sciences, medicine, arts and humanities. 

Initially launched as a PG Certificate with the option of taking single courses via Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) this multi-disciplinary, part-time intermittent online programme was designed to attract working professionals by allowing them that extra bit of flexibility that on-campus programmes simply cannot offer.  It quickly became apparent that there was a demand to extend the programme to offer a PG Diploma and an MSc which both launched in September 2016.

This September we welcomed our third full cohort taking our total student population up to 192.  Coming from over 40 different countries with wide ranging professional and academic backgrounds, including financial services, tech and healthcare, the programme truly does attract and support a world-wide, eclectic mix of students.  This year we are proud to strengthen our relationship with The Bayes Centre and be able to extend the benefits of being part of the Bayes community to our students.  Amongst other benefits, if students are ever in Edinburgh they will now have access to the members hot-desking areas within the Bayes Centre and by joining the Bayes community mailing lists students will gain access to an already established community of academic and industrial partners opening up potential new engagement opportunities with organisations working within the data science environment.  As part of the City Region Deal Data Driven Innovation Programme (DDI) the DSTI programme offers a great opportunity to expand upon the fantastic existing data science courses and programmes already offered by the University, whilst also providing a flexible route into study for a wider range of people, both within the region and further afield.

This is an exciting time for the DSTI programme and as we look to the future we hope that by strengthening our relationship with Bayes and building on our already established relationships with Schools across the University we can continue to attract and train the next generation of interdisciplinary data scientists, technologists and innovators.

Participation in the DSTI programme has significantly expanded my knowledge of data science and latest technologies. This has enabled me to lead an inspiring team and very quickly build an innovative analytics platform which, implements machine learning concepts.
