Collider: Technology and Tours

The pandemic has devastated so many of Scotland’s tourism and hospitality businesses and tour operators have been among the most severely impacted.

Everything is uncertain. We don’t know when visitors will return in any significant numbers. We don’t know when tour numbers may be able to return to pre-Covid-19 levels..’ Yet, at the same time, many of us are experimenting with new technologies and experiencing more of what’s on our own doorstep.

Can tours cater for the different needs of a new local market? Can novel digital technologies help tour operators create new or enhanced experiences without losing the personal touch? How can we continue to employ and deploy the great talents of our tour guides and storytellers? Can hybrid or digital tours be profitable? If so, what do those new business models look like?

Join Edinburgh Futures Institute, Design Informatics and Traveltech for Scotland for an afternoon of ideation and creativity to start devising novel, yet practical ways for tour operators to recover, adapt and renew in the future.

A Collider is a conceptual design event, bringing together computational thinking and design thinking, to pull informaticians together with designers and problem holders. At the start of the Collider we will set the scene with a challenge statement from tour operators. This will be followed by three thought-provoking talks from those outside of the sector. We will then break out into workshop sessions.
