Leading Technology and Innovation in Organisations (September 2022) About the course This course will help you build on your technical knowledge to include more general management and leadership concepts. It will provide you with a foundational knowledge of key concepts and frameworks to manage change and transformation, as well as an awareness of the practical applications of data science within organisations. A strong component of the course is a focus on professional development, including influencing, communicating with and leading others. You will have the option to complete an online psychometric assessment (Emotional Intelligence 2.0) which is followed by a 1-2-1 online feedback session with a trained EQi coach. This will help contextualise learning and provide an opportunity for additional reflection and accountability. This course will combine case study discussions, personal reflections and peer-to-peer learning to encourage interaction and debate. It will cover the following five topics related to leadership, data science and new ways of organising business activities: Understanding the links between strategy and operations, decision making Understanding self and others (e.g. leadership skills and styles, emotional intelligence) Innovation management (development process) Communication around technology (influencing others, communications) Managing and leading change The course is led by Dr Fumi Kitagawa, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at The University of Edinburgh Business School. This online credit-bearing course is aimed at aspiring leaders and managers, who have technical backgrounds and roles in organisations. The course helps them lead and manage organisational changes by providing knowledge of the key concepts, frameworks, tools and techniques to implement changes and innovation in the work place. This is an introductory/intermediate Masters course (SCQF Level 11). It develops your skills and/or provides a detailed overview of the subject - some foundational knowledge or experience is required. Please see the entry requirements for further details. Masters-level courses are relatively intensive and require independent learning, critical thinking, analysis and reflection. Entry requirements A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent. Entry requirements by country If you do not meet the minimum academic requirement, you may still be considered if: you have professional qualifications with substantial work experience, or you do not hold a degree or professional qualification, but you have a very strong employment record demonstrating a high degree of responsibility. Experience can be from any industry including the public sector, charitable organisations, or the arts. You must be comfortable studying and learning in English if it is not your first language. Learning Outcomes Observe and appraise the complexity of work environment including how people relate to each other, how technologies influence practices and the role of decision making. Recognise and assess their own attributes in relation to personal leadership and influencing styles. Describe and discuss the theories, framework and methods to examine organisational change, and management of innovation and technology. Apply theories, frameworks and methods to lead and manage change, appropriate to the field, within an organisational context. Synthesise, communicate and present effectively clearly using multiple formats. How will the course be delivered? This is a 10-week course, comprising a total of 100 hours study. The course is delivered as an online course. Assessment is 100% coursework. Course fees and funding Course fees for 22/23 are £1010 but funded places are available for people employed or unemployed in Scotland (residency requirements apply). Funding Through the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) Upskilling Fund, a limited number of fully-funded places are available on Data Upskilling Short Courses at The University of Edinburgh. Eligibility Funded places are available to those who meet SFC fee waiver criteria: “Courses/provision is open to all Scottish-domiciled/’home fee’ students, which is consistent with SFC’s policy for core funded student places. Students from the rest of the UK (rUK) are not normally considered eligible for SFC funding. If however a university is working with a Scottish/UK employer which has a physical presence or operating in Scotland, rUK employees of that employer would be eligible.” If you are from outside Scotland, you need to have settled status in the UK and meet other residency criteria: be ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the three years immediately before course start date, and have ‘settled status’ in the UK (as set out in the Immigration Act 1971) at the course start date, and be ordinarily resident in Scotland at the course start date.
