About the Alan Turing Institute

More about us and useful links.

The University of Edinburgh was a founder member of the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and is a member of the Turing University Network

The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and artificial intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research in data science and artificial intelligence, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data science and artificial intelligence.

The Turing University Network

Five founding universities – Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick – and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council created The Alan Turing Institute in 2015 and in 2023 the Institute created the Turing University Network currently containing 36 universities.

This network will provide a platform for institutions to work together and innovate while advancing research and education related to AI and data science.

Turing Fellows

A number of Turing Fellows from the University of Edinburgh have a formal affiliation with the Institute to help drive its scientific programme, in collaboration with other partners of the Institute. In addition, Research Fellows and PhD students from the University of Edinburgh form part of the dynamic multidisciplinary community of the Alan Turing Institute.
