Meet James Friel. Taking routine respiratory tests out of the clinic and into the home. The TeamJames Friel Dr Richard Hammond ProblemIdiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a respiratory condition that causes scarring of the lungs. The average life expectancy post-diagnosis is 3-5 years. Six-minute talk tests (SMWT) are performed by patients with IPF to measure their worsening condition over time. Due to a number of factors (clinic availability, cost to perform the test) these tests are performed every three to four months. It is not uncommon for patients with IPF to display no indication of decline at their regular appointment but end up in a high-dependency unit a few weeks later due to a subsequent decline.SolutionWe have developed a solution that allows this test to be performed at home and be automatically reported to a clinician. Our solution provides more frequent, higher fidelity data, allowing for improved patient assessment while reducing the need for in-person clinic appointments.Contact James Friel LinkedIn This article was published on 2025-10-28
