Claire Sowton - Moray House School of Education and Sport / Research Office What problem are you trying to solve? In 2022, with funding from the Creative Informatics Resident Entrepreneur programme I developed a data-driven pattern creator for us in the quilt making industry. The pattern creator takes a user-defined location, date and time and, drawing on star chart data, generates a bespoke quilt pattern with custom fabric calculations that work for each unique quilt. The pattern creator explores how, using data, quilt designs can be made personally meaningful. While the pattern creator works as intended in the quilt industry the potential for it to be utilised across creative disciplines is yet to be explored. The problem I am trying to solve therefore focuses on understanding the commercial value of a modified pattern creator in a range of creative industries. What is your idea?I propose to expand the scope of the original quilt pattern creator into a versatile design tool tailored for a broad array of creative fields, from fashion to product design. This involves refining the existing technology to create a new Minimum Viable Product (MVP) that can integrate seamlessly into different design processes, offering personalized and data-informed design patterns.
